The Bluegrass and Old-Time Time computer will be shipped off to the Macintosh repair facility in Tennessee later this afternoon for much needed repairs. Expect a Mother's Day episode of BGaOTT.

Well, a chip off the old mother board on the main computer in the Bluegrass and Old-Time Time studio became detached. Repair is costly and we are putting aside money to fix it. While waiting for available funds to fix this problem and access the Bluegrass and Old-Time Time song database we have been watching Louie Bluie on You Tube and suggest you do the same.

This week's show is an interview with the Reverend Zac Johnson regarding an oracle system he has devised using Harry Smith's notes on the Anthology of American Folk Music (Smithsonian Folkways).

To perform an oracle you need:

One stack of 12 red playing cards Ace through Queen with Queen being zero, ace being one through Jack as eleven.

This will be known as Deck A.

A second deck of black playing cards Ace through Seven numbered one through seven.

This will be known as Deck B.

Shuffle and draw from Deck A, multiply your number by 7.
For example, if you draw a five and multiply it by seven you will get a 35.

Next draw from Deck B and add this number to the result of Deck A times 7.

So if you drew a five from Deck A and a three from Deck B you would have a total of 38.

This card trick will give you a random number 1-84 to help you choose at random a song from the Anthology of American Folk Music.

The first song you choose will be your What, your current state of affairs.

Oracles should be done only when you really feel you need one, the what, or the current state of affairs will help you understand why you feel you need to do this.
When you complete the card trick to get a random number, find that song in the notes supplied with the Anthology, look, read, and most important, listen to the song.

Your second song selection (found by completing the card trick random number generator) will be your Where. This is your guiding light. When doing an oracle you are essentially asking, I am somewhere and I have a decision to make, where will this decision take me?

The third song is your How, your call to action. This song will tell you how to get from where you are at to where you are going.

The fourth song is optional, it is the why.

First song: What (Current State of Affairs)
Second Song: Where (Guiding Light)
Third Song: How (Call to Action)
Fourth Song: Why

We went through the process during the interview and came up with this.

What: Kelly Harrel - My Name is John Johanna
Where: Mississippi John Hurt - Spike Driver Blues
How: The Carter Family - Single Girl, Married Girl

And Then The Reverend Zac performed a rousing rendition of The Royal Telephone as learned from a recording of Sister mary Nelson.
